UB campus buildings are heated and cooled to maintain a comfortable environment. Faculty and staff can request heating and cooling service or after hours service.

Heating and Cooling Guidelines

To comply with UB’s energy policy, all campus buildings are set at standard temperatures during the following months:

  • Winter — between 68ºF and 70ºF
  • Summer — between 74ºF and 76ºF

Heating Guidelines

Campus buildings are scheduled to heat to 68ºF during the following hours:

  • Office buildings: Monday — Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
  • Academic buildings, libraries and laboratories: Monday — Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.

Campus buildings are scheduled to drop to 55ºF during the following hours, before scheduled heating resumes:

  • During off-hours outside of those listed above, and on weekends and holidays.
  • During a severe cold snap, during an extended weekend or shutdown, or due to the characteristics of some buildings.

Cooling Guidelines

Facilities monitors building temperatures to determine which air conditioning systems will be enabled first. Special purpose spaces and facilities are monitored to determine if modifications are warranted.

Campus buildings are scheduled to cool to 76ºF during the following times:

  • Office buildings: Monday — Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
  • Academic buildings, libraries and laboratories: Monday — Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.

Campus buildings are scheduled to rise above 76ºF during the following times, before scheduled cooling resumes:

  • During off-hours outside of those listed above, and on weekends and holidays, except in buildings with classes scheduled on Saturdays.

After Hours Heating and Cooling

You may request temporary heating or cooling adjustments after 5:00 p.m for an evening or weekend event at UB.

UB Academic Department Areas

To request after hours service, academic departments must complete the following:

  • Dean's offices must submit a Work Order Request and provide Customer Service with a list of individuals in each department who can request off-hours or holiday service.
  • Requests for off-hours or holiday service must be received by Customer Service by 12:00 p.m. on the preceding business day to allow time for processing.

UB Research Laboratory Facilities

UB research laboratory facilities and other special purpose spaces are monitored to determine if modifications to standard heating and cooling are required.

Portable Space Heaters and Air Conditioners

Portable space heaters and air conditioners are permitted at UB only if they meet the following requirements:

  • Unit must be plugged directly into a wall outlet.
  • Unit must have a tip-over safety switch.
  • Unit must be placed 3 feet from combustibles.

If units do not meet these requirements or are found to violate New York State Fire Code, they will be removed.
