Prof. Mark Frank – Invited Speaker on Deception and Technology

Mark Frank, professor in Department of Communication, was invited to speak at the CCICADA Fall Retreat, where he delivered a talk titled “Deception, human behavior, and technology: Dispatches from the front lines.”

In his presentation, Frank explored how security professionals work to interpret human behavior and identify deception, noting that while there’s no perfect “tell,” certain behavioral cues can offer valuable insight.

Frank highlighted some of the cutting-edge technologies being developed to detect subtle signs of deception, including thermography, automated facial-expression analysis, and laser Doppler vibrometry. He emphasized that even with these advanced tools, the human element remains essential—both in understanding the behaviors being measured and in making sound judgments based on them. He closed by considering how artificial intelligence could become a powerful partner, or a potential complication, in future security settings.
