University at Buffalo researcher Siwei Lyu, SUNY Distinguished Professor of Computer Science and Engineering and director of the Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, was interviewed by Scripps News about the rapid rise of real-time deepfakes.
Lyu explained that AI tools can now create highly convincing impersonations during live video calls and online meetings, making it increasingly difficult to tell whether someone is real. While some simple detection tricks still work, he warned that the technology is advancing quickly and that verifying identities online may soon require extra precautions.
Lyu emphasized the need to slow the spread of harmful deepfakes as the technology continues to evolve.
