The Wall Street Journal quoted Jacob Neiheisel, an associate professor at the University at Buffalo, in an article about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s outfit during his visit to the White House.
Zelensky swapped his usual military-style clothing for a black blazer-style jacket, collared shirt, pants, and combat boots. According to Neiheisel, an associate professor in the Department of Political Science, this change reflects a careful balance: Zelensky is “gradually shifting” toward a more formal, civilian style while still keeping military elements, signaling that Ukraine is still at war.
Neiheisel also explained that, given the past criticism from former President Trump’s administration over Zelensky’s casual clothing, this outfit shows that the Ukrainian leader is willing to “bend a bit to convention for the good of his country.” By appearing slightly more formal, Zelensky aimed to send a diplomatic message without abandoning the symbolism of his wartime leadership.
