Yotam Ophir, Associate Professor in Communication and head of the Media Effects, Misinformation and Extremism (MEME) lab, has recently been consulted by journalists about announced changes to Meta/Facebook content moderation and fact-checking. Ophir connects the changes to those previously made at Twitter:
“Mark Zuckerberg argues that his role model for this change is Elon Musk and what he did on Twitter,” says Yotam Ophir, a University of Buffalo communications professor who studies misinformation. “So we can look at Twitter for answers, right? And if we do, we see chaos.” Vox, Jan 8, 2025
“This seems like a really dangerous and unfortunate attempt by Zuckerberg and Meta to prepare for a second Trump administration, avoid conflicts with Donald Trump and his supporters,” and to avoid fines from regulators, Ophir said.” Quartz, Jan 7, 2025
