University at Buffalo researcher Jennifer Read, PhD, SUNY Distinguished Professor of Psychology, has received a $3.019 million grant from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, part of the National Institutes of Health, to study a new way to prevent alcohol-related sexual assault among college women.
Her project will test a program called the Friend-based Motivational Interview (FMI), which helps pairs of female friends learn and practice safety strategies together. Instead of large group training sessions, this approach focuses on friends who socialize together and builds on the protective steps women already take, such as staying together and planning ahead. A larger clinical trial will now evaluate how well this method works over time.
