CII Members Highlighted for Advancing Trust and Integrity in AI

In 2025, the University at Buffalo strengthened its leadership in AI and data science, with CII members and UB experts like Siwei Lyu, Rohini Srihari, Atri Rudra, and Karla Lellis shaping public trust, education, policy, and responsible AI innovation. They have addressed real-world challenges and impacted disciplines across technology, society, and governance.

In 2025, the University at Buffalo (UB) continued to strengthen its leadership in artificial intelligence (AI) and data science through major research advances, new academic programs, and statewide partnerships. Faculty across the university used Empire AI, New York State’s flagship AI supercomputer located at UB, to address real-world challenges in areas such as misinformation, education, healthcare, and public policy. These efforts reinforced UB’s role as New York’s flagship public university for AI research and innovation.

Several UB faculty members were highlighted for their impact. Siwei Lyu, SUNY Distinguished Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, gained national attention for his work detecting deepfakes and AI-generated misinformation, frequently advising media outlets and policymakers.

Rohini Srihari, professor of computer science and engineering, contributed research and public discussion on trust in AI systems and how people interact with emerging technologies.

Atri Rudra, inaugural chair of the Department of AI and Society, led the launch of new AI degree programs that combine technical training with an understanding of social impact.

In addition, Karla Lellis, undergraduate lecturer in the School of Law, was recognized for her work examining how legal systems are responding to AI-related harms such as fraud and exploitation. Together, these faculty contributions highlight UB’s commitment not only to advancing AI technology, but also to ensuring it is used responsibly and for the public good.
