Rohini Srihari, a professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, shares how she is pushing the boundaries of what chatbots can do. Unlike everyday customer-service bots, her AI systems are designed to make a real difference in people’s lives. Her work focuses on AI for the public good. She is developing tools that can:
- Support mental health care, giving people new ways to express themselves and seek help.
- Give a voice to individuals with motor neuron diseases, helping those who have lost the ability to speak communicate again.
- Assist artists, including choreographers, as they create new work.
She explains how she combines her love of language with computer science to build AI systems that are not only technically advanced, but deeply human-centered. As she tells host Cory Nealon, her projects are just the beginning of how AI can be used to improve lives and strengthen communities.
