Doctoral Internship in Health Service Psychology

Program Goals and Expected Competencies

The University at Buffalo Counseling Services is committed to training and professional practice that is consistent with our values around respecting and affirming diversity, inclusion, and equity in all our endeavors.  The doctoral program is designed to help interns develop an advanced level of skill in providing culturally sensitive clinical and professional services at a university counseling center (or comparable setting). Interns will gain knowledge and refine their skills in a variety of areas, including:

  • Individual and group psychotherapy
  • Clinical and diagnostic interviewing
  • Utilizing psychological testing as it informs clinical conceptualization and practice
  • Crisis assessment and intervention
  • Outreach
  • Consultation
  • Providing clinical supervision to counselors in training
  • Integrating science and scholarly activity into clinical and professional practice
  • Developing a sense of professional identity that is consistent with professional ethical standards, incorporates diversity/multicultural awareness and appreciation, and is congruent with your personal sense of self, values, strengths and interests

Please note minimum eligibility requirements:

  • 700 AAPI Grand Total Practicum Hours
  • 350 AAPI Total Intervention Hours
  • Three years of graduate training in a clinical or counseling psychology doctoral program
  • Comprehensive Exams passed by application deadline
  • Graduate program that is APA-accredited; CPA-accredited is also acceptable
  • Endorsement by your department chair regarding your readiness for internship
