What are export licenses?

Export licenses are government documents needed in exporting regulated items, including technologies and prohibited, dangerous or strategic materials.

They are granted by the federal agencies regulating those items and situations. The U.S. Department of State and Department of Commerce are the primary agencies.

Unlesss a license exception applies or a general license can be used in a particular situation, it can take many months and up to a year to obtain a federal a license. This may be impractical for visits by foreign nationals attracted to the university's open environment and those who want to participate in university hosted / sponsored activities.

The university export office coordinates with the federal agency when an export license is needed. The university empowered official, designated as such by UB's president, is the only individual who may officially sign a federal license application.
