Contemplative Sites Program

UB’s Contemplative Sites are one-year public art installations on North and South Campuses designed to enhance our campus experience and engage our university community in contemplating key issues.

About UB’s Contemplative Sites Program

The program, launched by the Office of the Provost, showcases art that celebrates both the history and diversity of UB in spaces that provide for contemplation on issues that resonate with the campus community. The first of these installations was the Progress Pride Paths artwork in Knox Quad.

In October 2021, the Public Art Committee invited the university community to submit thematic ideas for future Contemplative Sites. Each submission required sponsorship by a recognized UB entity such as a department, office, club, association, committee, or institute. Joint submissions by multiple entities were encouraged. A UB entity is able to collaborate with a non-UB entity as appropriate. The submitting entity commits to organizing one educational event around the project theme during the academic year.

Nominators were asked to submit ideas that:

  • Reflect UB’s values on diversity and inclusion
  • Encourage reflection and community building
  • While not mandatory, we encouraged submissions that are directly connected to the history of UB

In October 2022, the second of these installations, UB Athletics unveiled the mural to mark the 50th anniversary of Title IX. The project was a joint initiative by the Division of Athletics and the UB Gender Institute.  “This mural allows us to celebrate the history of our female student-athletes, coaches and staff. The prominent location will be a constant reminder to all who enter Alumni Arena of the importance of this initiative to the university and the Western New York communities” says Senior Associate Athletic Director for Sports Administration D'Ann Keller.
