What we do for the UB community

Network & Communication Services designs, builds and maintains UB’s wired and wireless networks, telephony services, internet connectivity and related network security. The unit is responsible for connectivity from the network core to the desktop and for the campus voice infrastructure.

Who we support

  • Students, faculty and staff using wired and wireless networks and campus phone services.
  • IT and facilities teams that depend on reliable network and telecommunications infrastructure.

What we provide

  • Installation and repair services from the network edge to end‑user locations.
  • Engineering and operations for wired and wireless connectivity, including connectivity to commodity and research networks.
  • Network security and remote access solutions such as firewalls and VPN.
  • Enterprise VoIP services, including desk phones, soft phones, voicemail and advanced call handling.
  • Design and liaison services for network and telecom components of construction and renovation projects.
  • Monitoring, documentation and incident triage for network and telecom infrastructure.

When you might work with us

  • You experience network or phone issues that require installation, repair or troubleshooting.
  • You are planning a new or renovated space that will require network and telecommunications design input.

Richard joined the University at Buffalo as Assistant Vice President/Executive Director of Network and Communication Services in November 2023.

In 2018, he joined Purdue University as Director of Networking and Telecommunications where he was responsible for the voice and data infrastructure at the main campus in West Lafayette and regional campuses in Ft. Wayne and Hammond/Westville.

Prior to Purdue, Richard was the Manager of Network Operations and Engineering for the University of Washington in Seattle, including UW Medicine hospitals and neighborhood clinics, for eight years. He has over 20 years of experience in a university environment.

Richard holds a MBA from the University of Texas at Dallas, and a Bachelor of Engineering in Electronic Computer Systems from the University of Salford in the UK.
