Dear International Students,
In today’s political climate, we understand the presence of federal enforcement agents on or near our campuses can be distressing to members of the UB community, in particular for our international students and scholars.
Earlier this week, many of us read social media posts, heard from friends about, or even personally observed suspected federal law enforcement activity on the western edge of UB’s North Campus.
We are writing today to first reassure you that UB Police have shared with us there is no indication that any member of the UB community was a target of, or was detained by, federal law enforcement on Monday.
Here is what we do know about what occurred Monday morning: at 8:05 a.m., UB Police received several calls from UB community members who reported they observed what were believed to be federal law enforcement officers and vehicles on North Campus near the Governors E parking lot along Audubon Parkway. UB Police were not notified by federal authorities of their presence on or near North Campus Monday morning. At approximately 8:30 a.m., UB Police observed federal law enforcement vehicles leaving North Campus without incident and they did not return. Agents were observed by community members at the privately-owned off-campus housing development, the Villas on Rensch.
Our colleagues in University Police have no reason to believe that federal agents intend to return to campus. And to be clear, UB Police have stated clearly there is no indication that UB community members were targets of Monday’s federal law enforcement activity.
Despite these reassurances, we know these events may still be upsetting for you. If you need assistance, please know the staff in International Student Services is here to support you. UB’s Counseling Services also stands ready to assist.
Further, the university has posted resources online for employees and students regarding interactions with federal law enforcement.
Sincerely,
International Student Services
