Microsoft 365 Copilot Premium enhances productivity and streamlines tasks by integrating with the data of your other Microsoft 365 apps.
This integration enhances collaboration by summarizing information across different Microsoft 365 tools leveraging our organization’s data securely while maintaining privacy. Microsoft 365 Copilot Premium works within individual apps to assist with specific tasks:
- Word: Draft, summarize and edit documents
- Excel: Analyzes data, creates charts and creates spreadsheets
- Outlook: Summarizes emails, suggests responses and manages your inbox
- Teams: Recaps meetings, suggests action items and managing projects with your Teams
- Powerpoint: Generate presentations and edit content
- OneNote: Take notes and organize information with AI help
- MS Edge: Browse and get information with AI assistance
While GenAI tools offer significant benefits, be aware of potential pitfalls and use them responsibly:
- Accuracy and Verification:
- Always review and verify AI-generated content for accuracy
- AI can make mistakes or produce biased results; human oversight is crucial, as it can pull outdated content or data that should not be made public
- Attribution and Transparency:
- Clearly disclose when AI tools have been used in creating content, especially in academic or official documents
- Do not present AI-generated work as entirely your own
- Ethical Considerations:
- Use AI tools to augment your work, not to replace critical thinking or decision-making
- Be aware of potential biases in AI systems and strive for fairness and inclusivity
- Professional Development:
- Engage in training and stay informed about AI capabilities and limitations
- Share best practices and experiences with colleagues
- Academic Integrity:
- Faculty should include clear guidance in their syllabi, on assignments, and in class discussion about allowable AI use by students. They should also be transparent about their own use of AI tools and model appropriate citation and accreditation for students whenever possible. Find faculty guidelines on the use of AI at UB.
- Students are responsible for knowing and following each instructor’s rules for acceptable AI use in their assignments. If they are unsure of the guidelines, students must ask. Find student guidelines on the use of AI at UB.
- Continuous Evaluation:
No. Copilot Premium relies on Microsoft Graph to surface Microsoft content you already have permission to access. You cannot block access entirely, but you can influence scope by using targeted prompts (e.g., “only consider my email”).
Not always. Here are key caveats:
- Scope: Copilot Premium searches across your Microsoft 365 Graph (email, calendar, OneDrive, SharePoint, Teams) based on your permissions. It does not search outside Microsoft apps (e.g., native iOS Mail).
- Exclusions: Archived files, deleted items, or external accounts are not included.
- Indexing: Older messages may be missed if they’re outside the active mailbox or not indexed.
- Desktop vs mobile: Full functionality—like summarizing threads, drafting replies, and meeting prep—is available in desktop Outlook. Mobile is catching up, but not all features are there yet.
