Summer Research Program Student Application

The application form will require you to upload the following (as PDF files):

a. Personal Statement  (1 page, 12pt font double spaced, with 1-inch margins, submitted as a pdf):

Describe your interest in research and your career goals. Please tell us:

• Why do you want to do research, and how does this research experience relate to your personal goals? Describe your interest in STEM or the allied health professions, research, and the Summer Research Program.
• Do you have any experiences that qualify you to undertake such research? Include your prior research experiences.
• Have you encountered challenges that have affected your educational career, either positively or negatively? Include your academic plans. Do you have any specific prior life experiences (in academia, professional, volunteer, etc.) that show your dedication to the pursuit of advanced degrees in the sciences or licensed professions?
• What are your short and long term professional goals and how can the CSTEP SRP contribute to your goals and professional aspirations? What do you hope to gain and accomplish, if selected?
• Is there any additional information that will help us evaluate your preparation and ability to succeed?

e. Two Letters of recommendation (on letterhead). At least one must be from a faculty member (not a TA or graduate student) who can speak to your academic abilities. The second letter can be from UB staff person, advisor, program counselor, or job/volunteer supervisor. Letters should be submitted as a PDF at the letter of recommendation page.

Two (2) letters of recommendation from people who know you well (professor, academic advisor, program counselor/advisor, student organization advisor (must be a faculty/staff person), job/volunteer supervisor, etc.) should be submitted via the recommendation link. Letters from faculty at institutions other than UB (in the case of transfer students) are acceptable if they can speak strongly of the candidates academic and research qualifications. We strongly recommend that at least one of your letters be from a full-time faculty member at UB, (not a TA or graduate student), who can comment specifically about your experience in academics and/or research experience.

NOTE TO LETTER WRITERS: Please submit as a PDF file and name the file this way: StudentLastName_CSTEP_SRP_Rec (ie, Johnson_CSTEP_SRP_Rec) and use the recommendation form when ready​. 

Letters are due by the application deadline. Please request them well in advance!
