Unit Logos

A unit logo is a way of adapting the UB signature to fit the needs of a particular school, office, or department. Unit logos conform to and support the overall university signature and therefore promote the University at Buffalo brand. At the same time, however, they promote a clear, prominent, and recognizable identity for each particular unit. These signatures can be used on all communications except university stationery. See the Stationery section for more details.

Six different iterations of unit signatures are available for use by schools, departments, and other units, at the discretion of the appropriate university officer (associate vice president, dean, chair, etc.). All versions are available to all units, although some versions work better for units with short names than for units with long names.

The School of Management is portrayed in the examples that follow. The dominant feature of the identity is the interlocking UB logo—it is seen first, and it is the image that stays the longest in the mind's eye. Establishing the unique identity of the School of Management, the unit name is displayed immediately below the UB logo. The components of our formal university name—University at Buffalo, The State University of New York—complete the identity. All elements are rendered exactly as they are in the official university logo, and the same color application rules apply.

Partnerships and Collaborative Efforts

Many units on campus develop partnerships or other collaborative arrangements with outside agencies, corporations, or organizations, and they wish to use the university's marks in combination with those of the outside agency so that the relationship between the two entities is promoted or displayed visually.

Requests to use the university's marks in combination with those of another agency must be approved by the Graphics Review Panel.

Nonstandard Logos

Using nonstandard logos prevents the university from promoting a clear, consistent public presence. Hence, logos that do not conform to the visual identity guidelines are strictly prohibited. The only alternative logo recognized by the University at Buffalo at the present time is the Division of Athletics logo. This logo is not authorized for use by other units of the university. Questions regarding its use should be directed to the Division of Athletics at (716) 645-3141.

Requests for exceptions to the rule against usage of nonstandard logos or other kinds of identifiers should be directed to the Graphics Review Panel.
