Student Veteran Experience
Learn about what is available to you as a student veteran at UB.
Thursday, August 20 | 10:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
The New Student Veteran Welcome takes place at the start of each semester (Fall, Spring) to help incoming student veterans with their start at UB. During the program you will connect with other students who have served, learn about campus resources, and prepare for your first semester at UB. There is no additional cost to attend this essential event.
Note: If you have conflicting orientation events with your graduate department/school, you should not attend this event.

Peer Advisors for Veteran Education, or PAVE, is a program to support student veterans at UB transition from military to college life. Through the PAVE Program, new student veterans are paired with Peer Advisors, current UB students who understand the unique challenges of adjusting to academic life after military service.
The PAVE Program helps new student veterans navigate campus resources, address academic challenges, and connect with community at UB.
You Can Expect:
- Email communication from your assigned PAVE Peer Advisor at the start of the semester.
- Connection opportunities with your PAVE Peer Advisor and other new student veterans through several events each semester.
- Guidance and support from a credible source who has successfully navigated the transition from military service to UB.
Meet the PAVE Peer Advisors
Rob Healy
Major: Social Work (MSW)
Year: 3rd Year
Rob served in the U.S. Air Force.
About Rob: Learn more about Rob.
Mike Shul
Program: MBA
Year: 2nd Year
Mike is currently serving in the Air Force Reserve.
About Mike: Mike completed his bachelor's degree from UB and is a WNY Prosperity Fellow. Mike has been stationed at the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station since 2012, spending 13 years in aircraft maintenance before transitioning into aviation safety. He was the NCOIC of the scheduled aircraft maintenance flight before deciding to pursue the full time MBA program.
Why PAVE? Mike has held many leadership positions in military and student resource groups, demonstrating his passion for helping his peers find success.
Sam Munoz
Program: Psychology
Year: Senior
Sam is a U.S. Navy veteran.
About Sam: Outside of school Sam spends time being a photographer, going to the gym, and doing arts and crafts.
Why PAVE? Transitioning to college from service can be difficult and overwhelming, Sam is excited to help ease that transition for new student veterans to help them feel welcomed and confident as a UB student.
About the National PAVE Program
The Peer Advisors for Veteran Education (PAVE) program is a national initiative developed by the University of Michigan to empower student veterans through peer support, connection, and leadership development. PAVE bridges the gap between military and campus life by creating a nationwide network of veterans helping veterans, so no one has to navigate higher education alone.
Since its founding, PAVE has expanded to more than 21 colleges and universities nationwide and has served over 47,000 student veterans with the support of more than 2,400 trained Peer Advisors and Team Leaders.
By participating in PAVE, UB joins this larger effort to empower student veterans and ensure they have the tools, support, and community needed to thrive.
The "Lucky" Davis Veterans Lounge is located on the third floor of the Student Union on UB’s North Campus. Veterans Services staff are located in the lounge.
The lounge includes a stocked kitchen, gaming space, and study area. Students are encouraged to visit during the semester between classes for free coffee/tea, snacks, and more.
Community Lunch
Join Veteran Services for Community Lunch on Thursdays from 12:00 - 2:00 p.m. Each week will be a different catered or prepared meal and the menu will be shared in the monthly newsletter. Some weeks will feature networking or connection opportunities with the SVA, PAVE Peer Advisors, or community resources. No RSVP required.
Efner "Lucky" Davis Veterans Lounge was dedicated on May 1, 2018.
Lounge Access & Hours
Military-affiliated students in good standing have UB Card swipe access to the lounge during Student Union operating hours.
The Veteran Services office at UB recognizes the UB chapter of the Student Veterans of America (SVA). SVA is a student-led organization where you'll find students who are committed to scholarship, service, and camaraderie. As part of a nationwide network of SVA chapters, UB's SVA supports student veterans, dependents of active duty military, and those who are currently serving in the Reserves, Guard or ROTC.
