UB Esports Varsity teams compete in the Esports Collegiate Conference (ESC) which is operated and run by the Mid-American Conference of the NCAA.
UBuffalo has four varsity squads that compete in the ESC: League of Legends, Valorant, Overwatch 2, and Rocket League. Esports, unlike traditional sports, has a shifting ecosystem. As new games are launched or change in popularity, the ESC may add or subtract games as they see fit.
UB's varsity esports team hosted their first LAN competition, where local teams from rival colleges linked up and plugged in to play Valorant, League of Legends, Rocket League, Overwatch, Smash Crews and Smash Singles.
Over 100 participants from six local collegiate crews (University at Buffalo, Buffalo State, Brockport, Villa Maria, Canisius, D’Youville and Daemen) came to duke it out for prizes and bragging rights. Check out the photo highlights above.
Game | UBuffalo Esports Status |

League of Legends | 1st place |

Smash Singles | 1st place and 3rd Place |
Our varsity teams are comprised of full-time students (currently all undergraduate students, but graduate students are also allowed to compete). All our students have year-round opportunities to compete but only compete for one semester per year in the ESC. This includes Valorant and Rocket League in the fall and League of Legends and Overwatch 2 in the spring.
About the Game: Rocket league is a technical game that involves both high-level dexterity and fast-packed gameplay. A team of 3 players works with their teammates to advance a ball down the field and score in their opponent's net. For a player to be successful, this requires a great deal of communication, understanding fine-tuned gameplay mechanics, and situational awareness. Rocket League was developed and published by Psyonix in 2015.
In the Esports Collegiate Conference (ESC), our varsity teams compete in Rocket League in the fall

Think you've got what it takes to compete with us on a varsity level? Show us what you can bring to our team during our tryouts! Typically, tryouts for all varsity teams take place in late summer and early fall prior to the season start.
If you’re interested in trying out for our varsity teams outside of our typical tryout window, please contact us for more information. Mid-semester or off-season tryouts will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
