Esports

One of Student Life's newest initiatives, UBuffalo Esports represents the university in high-level competitive play as a member of the Esports Collegiate Conference. Varsity teams compete in games such as Overwatch, League of Legends and Rocket League.

Varsity Esports at UB

Launched in 2020, UBuffalo Esports provides an opportunity to engage students in competitive gaming. Esports allows students to build critical thinking and strategy skills, and encourages teamwork and comradery. UB’s Esports Gaming Club already boasts more than 350 members, and that number is growing rapidly. The university continues to plan for additional venues, as interest in this emerging student experience continues to grow.

Next Steps

To continue the quest of implementing an emerging Esports program on campus, Student Life's primary focus includes identifying physical spaces for competitive and recreational game play. These spaces will allow students to explore common interests, participate in Esports activities and provide inclusivity and wellness for all participants.

  • Set for completion in February 2021, a newly renovated Esports gaming complex will open in Hadley Village.
  • A 50-station Esports area is scheduled to open in Red Jacket Quad during the summer of 2022.
  • The university continues to develop a comprehensive physical space for Esports in the Cybrary on the North Campus.
