Enhance the university experience by delivering a resilient, inclusive, and adaptive digital ecosystem that prioritizes exceptional customer service and ensures technology is accessible, customer-focused, and responsive to the evolving needs of the UB community.

Initiatives (Ongoing)

Chosen Name Project

UBIT launched the Chosen Name Project to allow commonly used university systems to display a chosen name that may differ from a legal name. First and middle names are complete; last names remain pending. This work supports inclusion and belonging across the UB community.

Increased Wi-Fi Coverage

UBIT is expanding Wi-Fi service in targeted campus locations. Current work includes outdoor coverage near Goodyear and Clement on South Campus during Fall 2026, with outdoor spaces near Governors and Ellicott on North Campus coming in 2027. All current (15) UB shuttles are complete, while Stampede bus work is pending approval. Walkways and tunnels are identified for upgrades, but not yet started.

To address connectivity problems in Diefendorf classrooms 146-147-148, 33 new access points were installed prior to Fall 2026. As of August 2026, more than 9,500 access points are currently installed across UB's campuses.

Departmental to Central Classroom

UBIT is working with IFSC and the Registrar on a smaller, more easily deployable classroom technology standard for departmental spaces with limited or no existing systems. The effort pairs practical technology standards with physical improvements, including fixtures, furniture, and equipment, to expand classroom availability and better meet faculty needs. As of August 2026, eight additional classrooms in Foster, BEB and Baird are centrally scheduled spaces, giving UBIT a current total of 188 central classrooms. 16 classrooms from Jacobs/Alfiero (School of Management) and O’Brian (Law School) will be added by 2027, increasing the total of centrally supported classrooms by 12% between 2026-27.

Customer Engagement

UBIT regularly engages its customers to ensure satisfaction and awareness of the technologies we support. In customer surveys conducted through our ticketing system, 93% rate having an excellent or good experience with UBIT staff.

Focus groups for students and faculty are hosted every fall and spring semester, with a faculty technology town hall held at least once annually. In addition, UBIT invites students, faculty and staff to participate in usability testing of new and existing services and software to ensure they meet customer needs.  For the past 30 years, UBIT has conducted a detailed technology survey of all UB students. Additional surveys of UB faculty and staff on technology needs are ongoing.

According to our 2025 student IT survey, 75% of UB students are satisfied with their UBmail (@buffalo.edu email), 69% with MyUB, 69% with HUB Student Center,  68% with UB Learns (Brightspace), and 62% with UB Print Anywhere kiosks. Over 80% of students also reported that they did not experience any problems with UB’s classroom technology.

UBIT continues to refine and develop new communication strategies to engage our campus community, relying increasing on short instructional and promotional videos. As part of this, we will launch an expanded fleet of digital signage screens across North Campus as of Fall 2026.

Multi-Modal IT Support Experience

UBIT delivers technology support through a variety of services designed to meet the diverse needs of students, faculty, and staff to support learning, teaching and work. Whether our customers prefer self-service, phone support, or in-person assistance, UBIT provides ongoing, flexible, customer-centered support across the university.

UB Tech Squad offers walk-up counter support and will also meet students by appointment anywhere on North or South Campus. The UBIT Help Center provides phone, email, and ticket-based assistance to the campus community. UBIT Field Services delivers hands-on technical support to departments across campus, and Capen’s Concierge support desk offers dedicated assistance for administrative offices.

UBIT's classroom support team maintains a 10-minute response time to minimize instructional disruptions and keep teaching on track. Together, these services receive over 48,000 support requests each year: approximately 72% through the UBIT Help Center, 8.4% through UB Tech Squad, 14.4% through UBIT Field Services/Capen Concierge, and 5.3% through UBIT classroom support. These teams work hard to ensure the UB community receives timely assistance using the method that best meets their needs.

Teaching Station Interface User Experience / Accessibility Upgrades

Teaching station touch panels in centrally-supported learning spaces are being upgraded with consistent controls and navigation. The updated  touchscreen is easier to use with improved navigation, consistent button placement, and clearer equipment status indicators with an updated design to match UB’s brand.

Initiatives (Completed)

Learning Space Profiles (Faculty Module)

UBIT is developing Learning Space Profiles, a new front end that helps faculty discover classroom technology and learning space features. The work is being developed in partnership with the Registrar and CATT.
