Master Plan Currently Underway
As a follow-up to the Student Union Master Plan process involving campus stakeholders, including student feedback, and a Project Team that included Architecture and Design Firms from October 2018 through March 2020, Student Life is moving forward with physical enhancements to the North Campus Student Union.
Project Update: September 2025
As the next step in implementing the Student Union Master Plan, Student Life is renovating the 2nd floor restrooms in the Student Union into an all-gender accessible restroom. Once complete there will be 6 individual restroom compartments each with its own toilet, and sink.
- The renovation work began on June 1, 2025, and substantial completion is scheduled for December 31, 2025.
- The staircase to the 2nd floor by Pistachio's is scheduled to re-open on October 15, 2025.

Goals
In Phase I of the implementation of the Student Union master plan, Student Life will help fulfill that the Student Union will serve as the “living room” of the North Campus, encouraging community-building among students as well as faculty and staff.
The project facilitates the opportunity to create a more student-friendly experience and atmosphere in the Student Union that can encourage more community interaction with the facility’s spaces, activities, and services and form a strong sense of UB community.
Phase I of this project also increases the visibility of student-use spaces as a way of establishing a contemporary student-centered student union and help students better navigate the facility and create a place they feel comfortable socializing and relaxing within its walls. This encourages student involvement in extra-curricular activities and provide spaces to support student-focused events.
Timing
Phased construction of the North Campus Student Union commenced in December 2023 and has an estimated project completion at the start of the Spring 2025.
- Winter 2023: new vestibule, 3rd-floor stair, updated furniture, ceiling and walls (south half)
- Summer 2024: update flooring
- Fall 2024: updated furniture, ceiling and walls (north half)
- Spring 2025: phase 1 complete; phase 2 underway
