Lumi Pro in UB Learns

Lumi Pro is a set of Generative AI tools in UB Learns that can assist instructors with creating module summaries, developing assignment and discussion ideas, generating quiz questions and providing quiz feedback to students based on their performance.

Students in UB Learns cannot use any Lumi Pro tool to generate content.

Lumi Pro Availability
  • Lumi Pro is available in all credit-bearing courses from Fall 2025 forward.
  • Instructors, Facilitators, Teaching Assistants, Course Builders and Graders have access to Lumi Pro tools.

D2L's Brightspace, SUNY and UB Learns

Lumi Pro is a set of AI-assisted tools developed by D2L, maker of Brightspace, that leverages Anthropic’s Large Language Model (LLM) Claude by using content provided by the course creator.

Although UB has a separate instance of D2L’s Brightspace (UB Learns), SUNY handles all negotiations and licensing for the state-wide system. SUNY’s agreement with D2L protects faculty IP by ensuring:

  • D2L does not own input content
  • D2L does not own output content
  • D2L will not use input content to train their Generative AI model

SUNY’s agreement with D2L requires that users will not represent that output content is human-generated when it is not.

Lumi Pro Tools Available in UB Learns

  • Lumi Summary

    Lumi Summary creates module descriptions based on content in a module.
  • Lumi Idea for Assignments
    10/1/25
    Lumi Idea for Assignments develops assignment suggestions based on content in a module.
  • Lumi Idea for Discussions
    10/1/25
    Lumi Idea for Discussions develops discussion ideas based on content in a module.
  • Lumi Question
    10/1/25
    Lumi Question generates questions from topics in the Content area of a course or from text uploaded directly to Lumi Question.
  • Lumi Study Support
    10/1/25
    Instructors can use Lumi Study Support to generate suggestions for content to review and/or a 2-3 sentence overview for students based on quiz results. Students will see a message that Study Support is AI-assisted.
