Info for owners (UB GitHub)

Learn how to request and manage a UB GitHub Enterprise Organization for your UB department.

On this page:

1. Request a UB GitHub Enterprise organization

2. Invite people to your Organization

All members must be explicitly invited to the organization by an organization owner. Use the GitHub account associated with the person's @buffalo.edu email address. This ensures compatibility with UB Single Sign-On (SSO), which is required for accessing enterprise resources.

Manage access with GitHub Teams

Organization owners should use GitHub Teams to manage Member access instead of assigning permissions to individuals directly. Teams provide scalable, structured access control and allow integration with UB's SSO group management.

Whenever possible, use Azure Entra ID groups to automatically sync team membership based on UB identity data.

Note: Team syncing occurs periodically, so it may take up to 1-2 hours for new members to be added to a team. This delay may cause temporary confusion for new members who do not yet have access to expected resources.

At UB, team membership is centrally managed through Azure Entra ID, and synced teams reflect real-time membership from UB-managed groups.

Once a GitHub Team is linked to an Entra ID group, its membership will stay up-to-date automatically.

Use synced teams to grant permissions to repositories, projects, and other organization resources.
