Employees may request to stop the clock toward continuing or permanent appointments for the birth, adoption, foster care placement of a child, critical life event or special circumstances. To effectuate a stoppage in service credit toward “tenure” or continuing or permanent appointment (without change to title, obligation, or leave status).
A temporary cessation of service credit toward continuing appointment shall be provided, at the employee's request, commencing with a child's birth/adoption/foster care placement. Such written request by an academic employee with an academic year obligation shall be approved for the time requested, one semester or two semesters. Such written request by an academic employee with a calendar year obligation shall be approved for the time requested, six months or one year.

A tenure clock stop based on a Critical Life Event (e.g. personal/family member illness, elder care issue) requires approval by your dean. Notifications to all supervisory levels is required – chair, dean and the Office of Faculty Affairs (OFA). OFA shares material with Decanal HR.
OR
A tenure clock stop based on Special Circumstances related to research requires approval by the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs. Because the individual circumstances vary, these clock stops are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Approvals by all supervisory levels are required – chair, dean and the OFA. OFA shares material with Decanal HR.
