Common questions

What are UB's Wi-Fi networks and what are they used for?

eduroam is UB's official, secure Wi-Fi network for phones, laptops, desktop computers and tablets, available to students, faculty and staff. You can use eduroam at thousands of participating locations around the world.

UB_Devices is the network you'll choose on devices where you can't input a username and password, like Smart TVs, printers or gaming consoles.

UB Connect is used by visitors to UB, and by UB students, faculty and staff to begin setting up eduroam.

UB Secure is an older Wi-Fi network. While UB students, faculty and staff are able to connect to  UB Secure, eduroam is the preferred secure Wi-Fi network at UB.

Why am I getting poor Wi-Fi signal strength?

There can be a number of factors:

  • Interference from walls, ceilings, metal, furniture, or even people
  • Your distance from a Wi-Fi access point
  • The number of simultaneous connections to a Wi-Fi access point

Try moving your laptop closer to the nearest access point to improve reception. If you continue to get a poor signal, report the problem to the UBIT Help Center at 716-645-3542.
