The UBITName Manager

The UBITName Manager is a self-service Web page you use to activate your UBITName, change your password and manage your security questions, non-UB email and cell phone number for password recovery.

Instructions

Activating Your UBITName

Once you have your UB information ready, visit the UBITName Manager (a self-service website) to activate your UBITName. You will be required to complete the following steps:

  1. Enter your UBITName making sure all letters are lowercase
  2. Click Continue
  3. Solve the CAPTCHA Security Check
  4. Click Continue
  5. Enter your three pieces of UB information*:
    • The last four digits of your Person Number
    • The month of your birth in numbers (e.g., January is "01")
    • Your one-time password

      * Note: If you accidentally log out in the middle of the UBITName activation process, you may need to contact the UBIT Help Center to have them issue you a new one-time password before you can try activating again.
  6. Click Continue
  7. Complete the following three tasks to activate your UBITName:
    • Accept the UB Computer and Network Use Policy by clicking Accept
    • Choose a new password and click Change Password
    • Set your security questions and answers (one you create and three from UB) and click Continue
  8. When you see the UBITName Manager: Home screen, click Add or update your password recovery contact information to be used if you forget your password and enter your non-UB email and cell phone number as instructed
  9. When you see the UBITName Manager: Home screen, your UBITName is activated! You are now ready to enjoy all the great services UB offers.

You can return to the UBITName Manager at any time to change your UBITName password or manage your security questions, non-UB email or cell phone number for password recovery

Changing Your UBITName Password

  1. Go to the UBITName Manager, a self-service Web page (opens in a new window).
  2. Enter your UBITName
  3. Click Continue
  4. Solve the CAPTCHA Security Check
  5. Click Continue
  6. On the Login Options page, choose I know my password
  7. Enter your existing password
  8. Click Login
  9. On the Home screen, in the Password Manager box, click the Change password link
  10. After reading the password requirements, type your new password in the New password field. You may use one of the randomly generated "Suggested passwords" from the dropdown box, or create your own
  11. Type your new password again in the Verify password field
  12. Click Change Password

If your new password did not meet the password requirements, you will receive an error message telling you what the problem was.

Note: The Password strength meter (which changes colors as you type) only indicates how hard your password would be for a malicious computer program to guess. A green bar does not necessarily mean that your choice meets all of the password requirements.

Register Your Non-UB Email and Cell Phone Number for Password Recovery

1. Go to the UBITName Manager, a self-service Web page (opens in a new window).

2. Enter your UBITName

3. Click Continue

4. Solve the CAPTCHA Security Check

5. Click Continue

6. On the Login Options page, choose Log in with my password

7. Enter your existing password

8. Click Login

9. On the Home screen, in the Identity Manager box, click the Add or update your password recovery contact information to be used if you forget your password link

10. Do not use Search. Underneath the Search box, click Click here to add or update your non-UB email address and cell phone number

11. After reading the requirements, type your cell phone number in the cell phone number field, including country code, area code and hyphens, for example 1-716-555-XXXX. The U.S. country code is 1

12. After reading the non-UB email address requirements, type your non-UB email address in the non-UB email address field

13. Click Continue

14. On the Request summary screen, click Submit to Send emails to this address with information about this request to your UB email or select Other and enter an email address, then click Submit. Your information will be updated instantly.

15. On the Request status screen, select Click here to check the status of the request to see the details of your request

16. Click the red button in upper right hand corner to logout.

Forgot Your UBITName Password?

Resetting Your Password with Your Security Questions

When you first activated your UBITName through the UBITName Manager, you had the opportunity to set up four security questions. If you set them up, answer them now to access your UBITName and change your password to something you will remember.

1. Follow the link above to the UBITName Manager

2. Enter your UBITName

3. Click Continue

4. Solve the CAPTCHA Security Check

5. Click Continue

6. On the Login Options page, choose the link labeled: I forgot my password (answer Security Questions).

7. Answer your security questions. They are NOT case sensitive.

8. Click Continue

9. On the Home screen, in the Password Manager box, click the Change password link

10. After reading the password requirements, type your new password in the New password field. You may use one of the randomly generated "Suggested passwords" from the dropdown box, or create your own

11. Type your new password again in the Verify password field

12. Click the Change Password button

If your new password did not meet the password requirements, you will receive an error message telling you what the problem was.

Note: The Password Strength Meter (which changes colors as you type) only indicates how difficult it would be for a malicious computer program to guess your password. A green bar does not necessarily mean that your choice meets all of the password requirements.

Resetting Your Password with Your Non-UB Email

If you registered your Non-UB email in the UBITName Manager, you can receive a one-time PIN which you can use to change your password.

Carefully read these instructions and follow the steps.

1. Go to the UBITName Manager, a self-service website  

2. Enter your UBITName

3. Click Continue

4. Solve the CAPTCHA Security Check

5. Click Continue

6. On the Login Options page, choose the link labeled: Send a password recovery PIN to my non-UB email address

  • If you did not set your non-UB email address, you cannot reset your password using non-UB email. Choose a different password reset method.

  • If you don't see the link, you do not have a non-UB email address set. You are unable to have a password recovery PIN sent to your non-UB email address. Instead you will see an error message instructing you to use a different method to reset your password.

7. You will receive an email to your non-UB email address from <do-not-reply@buffalo.edu> with a Subject of Your temporary PIN

8. On the Verifying PIN screen, enter the temporary PIN found in the email

9. On the Home screen, in the Password Manager box, click the Change password link

If your new password did not meet the password requirements, you will receive an error message telling you what the problem was.

Resetting Your Password with Your Cell Phone Number

If you registered your cell phone number in the UBITName Manager, you can request a one-time PIN which you can use to change your password.

Carefully read these instructions and follow the steps.

1. Go to the UBITName Manager, a self-service website  

2. Enter your UBITName

3. Click Continue

4. Solve the CAPTCHA Security Check

5. Click Continue

6. On the Login Options page, choose the link labeled: Text a password recovery PIN to my phone

  • If you did not set your cell phone number, you cannot reset your password using your cell phone. Choose a different password reset method.

  • If you don't see the link, you do not have a cell phone number registered. You are unable to have a password recovery PIN sent to your cell phone number. Instead you will see an error message instructing you to use a different method to reset your password.

7. You will receive a text to your cell phone number from 77161 UBIDM: To reset your UBITName password, enter the PIN provided

8. On the Verifying Mobile/SMS PIN screen, enter the PIN found in the text message

9. On the Home screen, in the Password Manager box, click Change password

If your new password did not meet the password requirements, you will receive an error message telling you what the problem was.

Resetting Your Password at the UBIT Help Center

If you do not remember the answers to your UBITName Manager security questions, you did not set security questions or need a new one-time password, the UBIT Help Center can help.

Choose from the following options:

  • Bring photo ID in person:
    Bring  photo ID to the UBIT Help Center walk-up counter, inside the entrance to the Lockwood 2nd floor Cybrary (North Campus) or inside the 1st Floor Abbott Hall (South Campus). Your photo I.D. must meet the same requirements as faxing, below. A UB Card with your picture on it is only accepted at the UBIT Help Center walk-up counter.

  • Call the UBIT Help Center:
    Call 716-645-3542 during business hours and verify your identity with UBIT Help Center staff using multiple data points so we can be sure it’s really you.
    - or -
  • Fax a copy of your ID:
    Fax your request to 716-645-3617. (Fax services are available for purchase at stores like FedEx Office, Staples and Office Max.) Your faxed request must include:
    • Your full name as it appears in University records - the name you used when applying to UB (students) or that you used on employment information with Human Resources (faculty, staff)
    • Your UBITName
    • A telephone number where you can be reached during UBIT Help Center hours of operation
    • A copy of photo ID (such as a driver's license or passport) that:
      • Is government-issued
      • Shows your date of birth
      • Is in English
      • Is legible
      • Is current (not expired)

If you fax your request, UBIT Help Center staff will contact you at the telephone number you provide, and give you a new, one-time password. You will use this one-time password to repeat the process to Activate Your UBITName.
