In the process of conducting research, they have developed new ways of regenerating bones, healing wounds, saving the lives of premature infants, improving the efficiency of solar power, and synthesizing new chemical compounds. Many of these inventions have been patented and have improved the quality of life all over the world.
UB faculty members have been recipients of the Nobel Prize, the Pulitzer Prize, the National Medal of Science, the MacArthur Foundation "genius award", and the Guggenheim Fellowship.

UB is a research-intensive university, housing world-leading research centers in areas that range from bioinformatics to homeland security. UB spends over $323 million annually on research. Inventions That Change the World
UB inventors have improved the world in small ways and large. Recently, a UB chemistry professor received significant federal funding to develop his patented BioBlower technology that rapidly removes biohazards from the air, and a UB physician-researcher patented a breakthrough device that monitors blood flow and volume, cardiac pumping ability, and heart valve function at a modest cost.
Life Sciences Research
The New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences is a centerpiece of UB’s research efforts. Situated on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus in downtown Buffalo, the center draws together UB experts within the life sciences, medicine, computer sciences, and engineering and joins them in partnership with outside research partners, including Roswell Park Cancer Institute and the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute.
