Using the Document Camera in a Panopto Recording

Centrally Scheduled Classrooms are equipped with document cameras (doc cams, also known as Wolf Visualizers). These doc cams are connected to the internal PC so you can share whatever you write on the doc cam in your Panopto recording.

Operating System: All

Applies To: UB Faculty and Staff

Last Updated: January 23, 2024

Instructions

Record the doc cam as the only secondary source

  1. Open Panopto
  2. Under Secondary Sources:
    1. Uncheck Capture PowerPoint
    2. Uncheck Capture Main Screen
    3. Click Add Another Video Source
    4. Choose Wolfvison UVC Camera or WolfVision Video Capture II
  3. Start recording
  4. Minimize Panopto
Tip:

You can check Capture Main Screen and record the main screen as well as the doc cam, but viewers will need to manually switch between those sources when they play the video.

Record the doc cam and computer screen at the same time

If you would like viewers to see the doc cam (and another program such as PowerPoint) at the same time, without manually switching between them, you can view the doc cam on the Internal PC and show it on the desktop beside any other program:

  1. Open VLC Media Player from the desktop
  2. Click Media > Open capture device
    • Video device name = Wolfvison UVC Camera or WolfVision Video Capture II
    • Audio device name = None (any other choice will result in audio feedback)
  3. Click Play
  4. Open the other program you want to display
  5. Resize the windows so they appear side-by-side
  6. Open Panopto
  7. Under Secondary Sources, uncheck Capture PowerPoint
  8. Start recording
  9. Minimize Panopto

The PC screen will be captured showing both VLC and any other program you’ve opened so they can be seen at the same time by viewers and people in the classroom.
