ArcGIS Desktop allows you to create maps, perform spatial analysis, and manage data. You can import multiple data formats and use powerful analytical tools and workflows to identify spatial patterns, trends, and non-obvious relationships.

Step 1: Review the System Requirements

Check the system requirements to ensure your computer has the hardware and software necessary to run ArcGIS Desktop.

Step 2: Download ArcGIS Desktop

Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8.1

  1. Download the zip file. This zip file contains both the ArcGIS Desktop installer and license file. The current license file is valid until January 31, 2025.
  2. Extract the zip file to a folder on your computer (such as the Downloads folder).

Step 3: Install ArcGIS Desktop

  1. Remove any previous version of ArcGIS Desktop or ArcGIS Server using the Control Panel.
    •  The software cannot be installed on a computer that has a previous version of ArcGIS Desktop or ArcGIS Server installed. 
    • It's OK if the computer has ArcGIS Explorer installed.
  2. If necessary, install the Microsoft .NET Framework (4.5.2 or later) and/or the Microsoft Visual C++ 2015–2019 Redistributable (x86).
  3. In the extracted zip folder, double-click ArcGIS_Desktop_XXXXXXXXX.exe.
  4. Follow the prompts to extract the installation files and install the software. The Complete installation is recommended.
  5. After the install finishes, the ArcGIS Administrator Wizard will open.

Step 4: License ArcGIS Desktop

  1. In the ArcGIS Administrator Wizard, select Advanced (ArcInfo) Single Use as the product to authorize.
  2. Click Authorize Now.
  3. Select I have received an authorization file… and click Browse. Navigate to the folder you extracted the zip file to in Step 2: Download ArcGIS Desktop, above.
  4. Select the EducationSiteArcGISDesktop_SingleUse_Student_XXXXXX.prvc file.
  5. Select Authorize with Esri now using the Internet.
  6. Enter your first and last name, a phone number, and your UB email address.
  7. Enter your information in the 3 drop-down menus.
  8. Click Next on the remainder of the prompts. The Authorization Wizard will connect to the Internet and complete the licensing.
  9. ArcGIS Desktop is now licensed and ready for use.
