Registering a Device Connected to an Ethernet Port or a Mini-Switch

To register a device that can access a Web browser, either directly to the Ethernet port in the wall or a mini-switch:

1. Connect a cat-5, 5e, 6 or 6e Ethernet cable to the Ethernet jack, located on the bottom of the Aruba box on the wall near the floor, or the Ethernet jack in the wall.

2. Determine if you are connecting directly to the Ethernet port or to a mini-switch:

  • Directly to the Ethernet port: Plug the other end of the cable directly into your device. If your device does not have an Ethernet jack, you may be able to purchase a USB-to-Ethernet adapter.
  • Using a mini-switch: Plug the other end of the cable into a port on the mini-switch, then connect your device to another port on the mini-switch using another Ethernet cable.

3. Turn your device on, open a Web browser and go to http://connect.buffalo.edu.

4. You should see the registration screen. Click Register This Device.

5. Enter your UBITName and password and click Log In.

6. Enter:

  • A name for your device
  • Its MAC Address

7. Click Create Device.

8. Repeat these steps for each device you want to register.

Registering a Router

If you want to use multiple devices and bought a router instead of a mini-switch, you must register it. Devices you connect to the router do not need to be registered.

  1. Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable to your router's WAN or Internet port.
  2. Connect a device with a Web browser (such as a laptop) to one of your router's Ethernet (LAN) ports using an Ethernet cable (If your device does not have an Ethernet jack, you may be able to purchase a USB-to-Ethernet adapter).
  3. Turn your device on, open a Web browser and go to http://connect.buffalo.edu.
  4. You should see the registration screen. Click Register This Device.
  5. Enter your UBITName and password and click Log In.
  6. Click Create Device.
  7. Enter:
    • A name for your router
    • Its MAC Address

You must also:

  • Turn your router's wireless capability off
  • Change your router's password to something secure to prevent other residents from using it
  • Disable any guest access on your router

Instructions will vary by manufacturer and model.
