Research at UB: An Overview

UB.

The University at Buffalo (UB) is a premier research-intensive public university with innovative faculty and students who introduce new technologies to improve people’s daily lives. Each discovery grows our region’s businesses. To date, UB’s research funding is responsible for more than 3,000 jobs. UB’s annual economic impact of more than $1.7 billion annually includes more than $360 million in research spending, mostly from federal agencies like the National Institutes of Health.

UB’s talented staff is involved in an outstanding list of cutting edge technologies:

  • UB cancer scientist, Kate Rittenhouse-Olson, PhD, launched For-Robin, Inc. and developed a promising antibody that stops breast cancer tumors from metastasizing to other parts of the body.
  • Hosein Kerdar, PhD, is one of four UB students who took first place in UB’s Henry A. Panasci Jr. Technology Entrepreneurship Competition, for an invention that removes problematic vibrations in high-precision devices (which can negatively impact readings on sensitive microscopes or impair the ability for precision equipment.)
  • Electrical Engineering associate professor and National Science Foundation Career Award winner, Tommaso Melodia, PhD, is developing a groundbreaking deep-sea Internet that could lead to improvements in tsunami detection, offshore oil and natural gas exploration, surveillance and pollution monitoring.

In addition, UB has an impressive technology and patent portfolio featuring:

  • A method and apparatus for measuring changes in cell volume
  • Nanoparticles for enhancement of tumor imaging
  • A reconstitution medium for protein and peptide formulations
  • Molecularly imprinted polymers for sensor applications
  • Compositions and methods for therapy of macular degeneration
  • Compositions and methods for stimulating immune response against pneumonia
