How UB aims to build on the AI boom

A front page article in The Buffalo News shared how state and national leaders are tapping UB's expertise in artificial intelligence. The article notes Gov. Kathy Hochul has named UB as the site of Empire AI, a $400 million statewide consortium to support AI research and education. "Empire AI changes the equation for developing AI research," said Venu Govindaraju, UB's vice president for research and economic development.

The article cited UB's decades-long leadership in AI as an impetus as well its supercomputing facility ranking among the best at any university. According to Govindaraju, Empire AI will make this system "a couple of magnitudes larger."

The regional distinction as a federal tech hub could also bolster innovation in the area. As the article states, "if the tech hub plan succeeds, UB, Syracuse University and Rochester Institute of Technology will benefit from a regional boom around the semiconductor chips that fuel AI."

The article also points to UB's focus on entrepreneurship and how, as UB recruits, more faculty and students want to found startups and contribute to society.
