UBIT has implemented a change in how UBVPN is accessed due to a surge in unauthorized login attempts on UBVPN servers. Although this change may affect your access method, rest assured it’s crucial for network safety.

Michael Canfield joined UB in January 2023 as an IT Communications Specialist for UBIT. A former newspaper reporter with a background in higher ed communication, Michael is also a volunteer firefighter. When he’s not writing or learning about all things UBIT, Michael likes to spend time with his wife and two English bulldogs.

Previously, UBIT offered a convenient shortcut URL: vpn.buffalo.edu/UBVPN. This link allowed people using the VPN to bypass the VPN selection window and connect directly. However, this shortcut was contributing to security vulnerabilities and was removed.

The new approach

Moving forward, UBIT encourages use of the standard URL: vpn.buffalo.edu. When connecting, select UBVPN from the group/vpn list in the popup window. This adjustment has already proven effective in mitigating unauthorized login attempts.

Your cooperation matters

UBIT appreciates your cooperation and understanding as network security is prioritized. This change plays an essential role in maintaining a safe and reliable UBVPN environment for all.
