Industry Engagement Support Incentive

To strengthen partnerships with industry and expand collaborative research opportunities, UB launched the Industry Engagement Support Incentive.

Funded by the Office of Research, Innovation and Economic Development, the program supports faculty in pursuing and expanding industry-sponsored research through direct financial support for eligible awards.

Program Overview

For each eligible industry-sponsored award, investigators will receive an incentive equal to 20 percent of the Total Project Cost (TPC), up to a maximum of $10,000 per award.

Key Details

  • Investigators may earn the incentive multiple times, but only once per award.
  • Awards must meet the criteria of a fully negotiated, industry-sponsored award that includes UB’s full indirect cost (IDC) rate.
  • Incentives are automatically approved for qualifying awards.

Eligibility

This incentive applies to:

  • New industry-sponsored research awards
  • Projects executed on or after March 2, 2026
  • All industry sponsors, across all disciplines and project types
  • Awards of any size

This incentive does not apply to:

  • Federal, state, or foundation-sponsored grants
  • Existing awards executed prior to March 2, 2026
  • Awards considered “gifts”

Funding and Administration

  • Industry sponsors will continue to pay UB’s full negotiated IDC rates — the incentive does not reduce or waive IDC.
  • Incentive funds should be budgeted during proposal development, combining both sponsor and UB incentive funds within the project total.
  • Funds become available after award execution, in partnership with your post-award specialist in Sponsored Projects Services (SPS).

UB’s Commitment

The Industry Engagement Support Incentive reflects UB’s ongoing commitment to:

  • Expanding collaboration with industry partners
  • Increasing translational and applied research impact
  • Helping faculty diversify their research funding portfolios
  • Streamlining processes that support industry engagement
