Animal Care Facilities and Staff

The Laboratory Animal Facilities are accredited, licensed and able to receive Public Health Services funding. The staff includes several professionals highly capable of providing professional animal care, training researchers and managing the facilities in support of your research goals.

Animal Care Facilities

There are modern and fully equipped animal facilities on all three campuses with the Laboratory Animal Facilities headquartered in the Biomedical Education Building on South Campus. Our animal care program has full AAALAC (Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care) accreditation.

  • Animal housing for more than 13 species of research animals;
  • High-security, barrier housing for pathogen-free animals and for genetically altered animals;
  • Procedure rooms for use by researchers;
  • Four operating theaters for sterile surgery;
  • Two surgical training areas;
  • Comprehensive equipment for gas anesthesia and anesthesia monitoring;
  • A radiological suite for diagnostic X-ray;
  • A pharmacy for sourcing and dispensing routine preparations as well as scheduled drugs;
  • A clinical pathology laboratory for blood counts, biochemistry and other diagnostic tests;
  • A conference room for training and researcher meetings; and
  • An air-conditioned vehicle for animal transport. 
  • In addition, facilities for imaging animals are available at CTRC which include PET, CT and MRI.

LAF Contacts

Clinical veterinarians handle veterinary and technical services while also supervising veterinary technicians. The Finance Director supervises the administrative services and the facility manager is responsible for animal husbandry and infrastructural services.

Principal and senior laboratory animal caretakers are assigned within the various facilities according to unit size and animal population.

  • All units are staffed 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM on weekdays and 7:30 AM to 11:15 on weekends and holidays.
  • The main office is open 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM on weekdays.

After working hours

Public Safety

If there is a need to contact anyone within the LAF after working hours or on weekends or holidays, call Public Safety/University Police at 645-2222. Public Safety has an emergency roster of key employees and will contact the appropriate individual. Make sure to leave a clear message and your telephone number.

Physical Plant

For physical plant emergencies on weekeends call 645-2025, for weekdays call 645-2028 x7.

In case of animal emergency please contact veterinary On call.

Certification Documents

We no longer are required to submit 3 year registration updates, which means we will no longer be issued a USDA Certificate.

To maintain staffing, supplies and equipment the LAF has a per diem fee structure for the care of animals.
