Underscoring UB’s commitment to realizing AI for good, the university has established the new department of AI and Society. As inaugural chair, Atri Rudra will lead the department’s multi-disciplinary programming, bringing to life the vision of creating AI systems that are built by society, for society.

He advises organizations on how to best innovate responsibly while safeguarding their data and operations.
As a labor economist, Song McLaughlin studies how public policies inform labor markets and impact workers. She applies this expertise to examining the opportunities and challenges of artificial intelligence in the workplace.
Siwei Lyu created the DeepFake-O-Meter to make detecting fake video and audio online accessible to everyone. His work helps journalists and the public authenticate legitimacy and accuracy of media, curbing the spread of misinformation.
Ophir, a mass communications expert, explores AI’s role in misinformation – both how it contributes and how can be leveraged to combat it. Ophir is currently studying the potential of AI-based tools for content analysis by journalists and other media experts to fact-check media articles, with emphasis on national interests in health, science and politics.
Hahn, a mass communications expert, studies the effects of AI-generated content on human behavior, with a focus on children and adolescents. She studies entertainment media’s effects on children’s social attitudes and behaviors, and separately, the role of media in the radicalization of extremists.
An early pioneer in AI research, UB currently has more than 400 faculty researchers working at the cutting edge of the technology to solve society’s greatest challenges. And now, as home to Empire AI—New York State’s $500 million, public-private consortium—we’re poised to realize AI for good.
