Minor in Philosophy

The study of philosophy fosters skills that are useful in virtually any field of study: the abilities to organize ideas, to assess the pros and cons of an issue, to evaluate arguments and to reason effectively.

Completing the Philosophy Minor Program

Academic Requirements
Minimum GPA of 2.0 overall.

Transfer Credit Policy

Comparable transfer courses may count toward the philosophy minor at the discretion of the director of undergraduate studies.

Required Courses
Any six credit hours in 100-level philosophy courses, plus any 12 credit hours in 200 to 400-level philosophy courses.

UB Seminar courses cannot count towards minor requirements.  

Departmental Honors Requirements
Philosophy minors complete their minor "with distinction" if their final philosophy GPA is at least 3.25, "with high distinction" if their final philosophy GPA is at least 3.5, and "with highest distinction" if their final philosophy GPA is at least 3.75.

Total Credit Hours Required
Total Credits Required for Minor: 18

Minors and certificates must be completed in conjunction with a major and all university degree requirements must be met.

Students should consult with an academic advisor to determine how any transfer or exam credit might be utilized in meeting general education, prerequisite, or major requirements.
