Published May 26, 2022

Dear University Community:

We are very pleased to announce the appointment of Annette B. Wysocki, PhD, RN, FAAN as dean of UB’s School of Nursing.  Dr. Wysocki will begin her role as dean in early July.

Dr. Wysocki’s appointment results from an extensive national search that yielded a pool of highly competitive candidates. Dr. Wysocki, who currently serves as dean and professor in the School of Nursing at Stony Brook University, brings to this role extensive leadership experience, exceptional research accomplishments and teaching record, a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities in the field of nursing, and strong vision for enhancing the impact and reputation of the school.

Dr. Wysocki joined Stony Brook University in 2019 from the University of Massachusetts Amherst where she served as associate dean for research and professor in the College of Nursing. At UMass, Dr. Wysocki was instrumental in establishing the UManage Center, an interdisciplinary research center focused on developing technologies to manage symptoms of chronic illness. She also worked with leaders across campus to secure $95 million to establish the Institute for Applied Life, and she was on the state-wide Life Science Task Force to develop a five-year plan for the UMass System that obtained $300 million in economic development funds. Dr. Wysocki previously was the first permanent scientific director of the National Institute of Nursing Research and chief of the Wound Healing Laboratory at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

A fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and author of more than 50 scholarly publications, Dr. Wysocki’s research focuses on the pathophysiology of delayed healing in chronic wounds and has led to the development of dressing products to promote healing and diagnostic tests to detect whether wounds are on a healing trajectory. Her work has been funded by the NIH, National Science Foundation, Office of Naval Research, and American Nurses Foundation.

Dr. Wysocki has served in many advisory and leadership roles, including as president of the Wound Healing Foundation and on the board of directors of the Wound Healing Society. As a member of the American Society for Cell Biology, she served on the Congressional Liaison Committee. She has received numerous awards and honors, including the Distinguished Service Award from the Wound Healing Society, and she is a Harvard Macy Scholar and a fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine.

Dr. Wysocki holds a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin and bachelor’s and master’s degrees from East Carolina University, all in nursing.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Dean Jean Wactawski-Wende and all of the members of the search committee for their outstanding service, which was vital to the successful outcome of this search.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank Dean Marsha Lewis for her excellent leadership of the School of Nursing over the last decade.  Dean Lewis is stepping down as dean on May 31, 2022.

Dr. Allison Brashear, vice president for health sciences and dean of the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, will serve as officer in charge of the School of Nursing from June 1, 2022 until Dr. Wysocki arrives at UB in July.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Wysocki to this important leadership role at UB and within our campus community. For more details on this appointment, please view the full announcement here.
