The microbiomes are the communities of microorganisms that live on and in hosts and as part of the environment. The UB Microbiome Center (UBMC) focuses on the microbiome of humans and laboratory animal models. Humans harbor microbiome communities on skin, airways, genitourinary tract and the gastrointestinal tract, including the oral cavity. When microbiomes are not balanced, we can suffer from chronic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, inflammatory bowel diseases and oral diseases, including periodontal disease.
The mission of the UBMC is to serve as an academic hub of microbiome-related research in the UB community, facilitating collaborations and supporting inter-disciplinary projects through our clinical, laboratory and analytical research infrastructure.
