Dear Colleagues:
The UB Curriculum, which was launched in fall 2016, is UB’s innovative core educational experience, designed to provide undergraduates with the experiences and liberal arts foundation they need to thrive in our complex and global society. It was built around high-impact practices to improve student learning, educational quality and student engagement, and it positioned UB as a national leader in offering a dynamic general education program.
Given that nearly 10 years have passed since the launch of the UB Curriculum, it is an appropriate time to consider the future of general education at UB, with the benefit of faculty, student and staff perspectives.
We are currently in the process of creating a Future of the UB Curriculum Committee to carry out this charge. The committee will be co-chaired by Robert Adelman, Professor of Sociology and Criminology (CAS); Carl Lund, SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering (SEAS); and Jennifer Surtees, Professor and Chair of Biochemistry (JSMBS). The committee will launch in spring 2026 with the majority of the work taking place during the 2026-27 academic year.
We are writing to invite nominations, including self-nominations, of faculty and staff to serve on the committee. Please submit nominations through the UB Provost website by March 31.
We look forward to working with UB faculty and staff from across the university to ensure that our general education program continues to provide innovative learning opportunities that meet student needs over the next decade and beyond.
Sincerely,
A. Scott Weber
