In-person classes cancelled April 8

Dear University Community:

On Monday, April 8, a total eclipse of the sun is expected to bring more than one million visitors to the Buffalo region. In fact, Western New York is virtually on the centerline of the path of totality, and thus will be a major destination for educators, scientists, media, and eclipse chasers. This is a once in a lifetime event and an exciting time in our community.

In anticipation of very significant traffic and congestion associated with the solar eclipse and in support of our local communities, UB is cancelling all in-person classes on Monday, April 8, and encouraging instructors to offer classes remotely. If instructors elect to shift to remote instruction, they must provide asynchronous options for students who are unable to access remote classes in real time. Faculty should inform students of their plans for April 8 classes by Monday, April 1.

While the university will remain open on April 8 to provide continuity of operations for students, supervisors are encouraged to discuss telecommuting options with employees where feasible based on a department’s operational needs. Human Resources will provide additional guidance to units, departments, and supervisors next week regarding telecommuting and other attendance questions related to the eclipse.

In the coming days, University Events will communicate with students, faculty and staff regarding the availability of free eclipse viewing glasses to help those on our campuses view the eclipse safely. Information about eclipse viewing parties will also be shared with the university community later this month.
