Dear University Community:

It is our great pleasure to announce the appointment of SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor of Periodontics and Endodontics, Joseph J. Zambon as Dean of the School of Dental Medicine, effective May 9, 2016.

Dr. Zambon’s appointment results from an extensive search that yielded an international pool of highly competitive candidates. Dr. Zambon brings to this role exceptional scholarly and teaching accomplishments, significant administrative experience, and proven dedication to students and faculty. Under his leadership, we are confident that the School of Dental Medicine will continue to be a global leader in the innovation of oral health through research, education, clinical care and service.

A nationally and internationally-recognized authority on periodontal pathogens, Dr. Zambon has authored or co-authored nearly 200 scholarly articles and book chapters, including four of the most highly cited articles in dental journals, has been principal or co-principal investigator on more than 60 grants and contracts, and holds five patents. Dr. Zambon’s contributions have been recognized by many awards and honors including, to cite just a few, the R. Earl Robinson Periodontal Regeneration Award and Clinical Research Award from the American Academy of Periodontology and the UB Exceptional Scholar Award for Sustained Achievement. He is also a fellow in both the International College of Dentists and American College of Dentists.

A UB faculty member since 1982, Dr. Zambon has served as Interim Dean since August 2015. He previously served as Associate Dean for Advanced Education and Faculty Advancement and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the School of Dental Medicine. In the latter role and in his own teaching, Dr. Zambon has incorporated the latest technological advances and electronic innovations into the school’s educational programs, which has resulted in the school being widely recognized as a pioneer in innovative educational technology. Dr. Zambon’s excellence and innovation in teaching have been recognized by numerous School of Dental Medicine awards, including twice being named Dental Educator of the Year by students.

We extend our sincere thanks to search committee chair Dean Jean Wactawski-Wende and all of the members of the search committee for their outstanding service, which was critical to the successful outcome of this search. For more details on this appointment, please view the full announcement here.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Zambon and welcoming him to this important leadership role within our campus community.
