Dear University Community:

I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Robin G. Schulze, Associate Dean for the Humanities and Professor of English at the University of Delaware, as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, effective July 1.

Dr. Schulze’s appointment results from an extensive search that produced a national pool of highly competitive candidates. Dr. Schulze emerged as the leading candidate as a result of her significant leadership experience, impressive scholarly accomplishments, creative energy, strong commitment to the liberal arts and sciences, and proven ability to work with faculty to create and implement a shared vision. As dean, I am confident that Dr. Schulze will lead our College of Arts and Sciences to build on its strengths, achieve even greater prominence in research and education, and enhance its impact in our local and global communities.

An expert in modernist American poetry, textual scholarship, editorial theory, and modernist literature and culture, Dr. Schulze is widely recognized as one of the world’s leading scholars of the poet Marianne Moore and her modernist peers. A prolific scholar, Dr. Schulze has published four books and more than 20 articles and book chapters. Her research has been supported by many grants and fellowships, including prestigious grants from the National Humanities Center and the American Philosophical Society. Dr. Schulze is the President and Executive Board Member of the Society for Textual Scholarship and its past Executive Director.

As Associate Dean at the University of Delaware, Dr. Schulze manages six departments and five interdisciplinary programs and works closely with the Associate Deans for the Natural Sciences, Arts, and Social Sciences. She led the humanities faculty in the development of a shared emphasis in material culture, raising more than $1 million in foundation and university support and resulting in a cluster hire across the humanities disciplines. Dr. Schulze similarly brought faculty together to make the University of Delaware a leader in public humanities-focused research and graduate education.

Dr. Schulze joined Delaware from the Pennsylvania State University, where she served as Head of the Department of English from 2007 to 2011. Prior to that, Dr. Schulze served in numerous administrative roles, among them director of the Center for American Literary Studies, director of undergraduate studies, and chair of the graduate studies committee.

Dr. Schulze holds a PhD in English and master’s degrees in English and music performance from the University of Michigan and a bachelor’s degree in music history from Yale University.

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to search committee co-chairs Dean Robert Shibley and Professor Diana Aga and all of the members of the search committee for their outstanding service, which was vital to the successful outcome of this search. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Bruce Pitman for his dedicated leadership of the college over the past five years.

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Schulze to UB and to this important leadership role within our campus community. For more details on this appointment, please view the full announcement here.
