“Content feels finished to me when the storyline and objective is clear. ”
Alicia Maxwell, Outreach Coordinator
Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering

Maxwell was first introduced to UB in her sophomore year, the former Executive Director of the Student Success Center at St. Bonaventure University invited her to UB's Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration, featuring keynote speaker Nikole Hannah-Jones, author of the 1619 Project. It was there that she was introduced to the university and it's community, one committed to sparking conversations and driving dialogue around topics long considered "difficult."

Having graduated from St. Bonaventure as an English Literature major, she always knew that storytelling and advocacy through written word would be part of her future. Her English Literature courses fostered creativity and encouraged thinking outside the box, while her journalism classes introduced her to advocacy-driven storytelling.

"Content feels finished to me when the storyline and objective is clear. I didn't graduate with a degree in engineering, so I consider myself part of the audience, even when I'm the one writing it," says Maxwell. "When the information is accessible to non-engineers and reads like a story with a clear beginning, middle and end, grounded in a strong 'why,' I know it's time to publish."

As a staff writer for the Institute of Sustainable Logistics (ISTL), Maxwell supports the promotion of transportation research by copy editing and publishing articles on the ISTL news page. Her work highlights faculty and student-led research initiatives, as well as laboratory updates, with the goal of increasing visibility and engagement with ISTL's ongoing contribution to the field of sustainable transportation.

Having grown up in New York City, where air pollution was a constant presence, Maxwell developed an early awareness of the importance of sustainable transportation. Through her work with ISTL, she has gained deeper insight into the future of transportation research and innovation. Maxwell looks forward to continueing her collaboration with ISTL and supporting the promotion of their research.

Maxwell joined the department in November 2024.
