Thousands of students to receive degrees this weekend at UB

Graduating students celebrate at Alumni Arena.

Additionally, Satish Tripathi will receive UB’s highest honor, the Norton Medal, as he prepares step down as UB president

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Starting today, thousands of University at Buffalo students dressed in cap and gown will celebrate years of hard work and perseverance as they walk across the stage to receive diplomas.

All told, UB will confer more than 9,600 degrees and certificates during the 2025-26 academic year, including more than 3,600 degrees and certificates awarded to students during the summer and fall of 2025.

The ceremonies, which kick into high gear Friday morning and continue through Sunday afternoon, will be the last with UB President Satish K. Tripathi leading the university. Tripathi, who will receive the Chancellor Charles P. Norton Medal, UB’s highest honor, on Sunday morning, will return to his faculty role in July after 15 years as UB president.

News media planning to cover ceremonies must be credentialed by a member of University Communications or event staff.

Commencement highlights include:

  • Sunday at 9 a.m. at Broadview Arena (formerly Alumni Arena). This is a College of Arts and Sciences (undergraduate arts, natural sciences and mathematics) ceremony. Tripathi will confer degrees and receive the Norton Medal. Since being named UB president in 2011, Tripathi will have presided over 150 commencement ceremonies and the awarding of more than 140,000 degrees.
  • Saturday at 9 a.m. at Broadview Arena and Center for the Arts. Students from the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the School of Social Work will receive degrees.
  • Saturday at 1 p.m. at Broadview Arena and Center for the Arts. Students from the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences will receive degrees.
