ISTL researcher co-author study on driver’s license delays among teens with ADHD

The article, “The examination of factors contributing to delays in obtaining a driver’s license for youth with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder,” is scheduled to appear later this year in the Journal of Attention Disorders. The study focuses on adolescents with ADHD, who are more likely than their peers to experience delays in obtaining a driver’s license. Researchers used logistic regression analyses to determine whether cognitive functioning and parenting behaviors were related to participants’ licensing status. 

The study includes data from 172 adolescents with ADHD who were enrolled in a randomized controlled trial (NCT01322646). Researchers collected information about participants’ baseline cognitive functioning and parental monitoring, as well as their licensing status at a 12-month follow-up.  

The research was supported by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (R01HD058588), led by Principal Investigator Dr. Gregory A. Fabiano, Professor, and Associate Director of Clinical Training at Florida International University (FIU). The analyses found that inferior parental monitoring was connected to a greater likelihood of being licensed at the follow-up.  There were no significant associations between baseline negative parenting or cognition with 12-month licensure status. These findings indicate that parental monitoring may be a point of driving intervention for young people with ADHD and their families.

A primary component of the research involved observing teen participants in targeted driving scenarios designed to challenge cognition and mental workload. The research team used a full-fidelity driving simulator at the University at Buffalo (UB). The research was performed using the original setup in the Motion Simulation Laboratory, formerly located in Furnas Hall, North Campus. 

The facility served as a precursor to the current driving simulator setup within the Transportation Research & Visualization Lab, an anchor research facility of the Stephen Still Institute located in Ketter Hall. 

Dr. Morgan L. Jusko, a postdoctoral scholar in the Development of Alcohol Research Training Program in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh, is the article’s lead author. Jusko earned her BA and MA degree from UB under the mentorship of Dr. Larry Hawk and later earned an MS and PhD from FIU under the mentorship of Dr. Joseph Raiker and Dr. Fabiano.  

In addition to Jusko and Hulme, the research team includes Hawk, Fabiano, Michelle G. Bubnik-Harrison, Nicholas Albino, Stefany Coxe, Nicole K. Schatz, Karen L. Hulme, Rebecca K. Vujnovic, and William Pelham Jr.
