CSEE PhD student investigates Next-Generation Mobility and Resilient EV Networks

Ji Wang joined the University at Buffalo’s (UB) PhD program in civil engineering in August 2024. Since then, he has conducted research under the guidance of Ziqi Song, associate professor in the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering (CSEE).

Wang is a student affiliate of the newly established Sustainable Urban Mobility and Intelligent (SUMIT) Laboratory. The lab supports large-scale traffic monitoring and management, scaled robotic simulations, and digital twin modeling to improve the safety and efficiency of emerging transportation systems. 

His research focuses on electric vehicle infrastructure planning, transportation network resilience, autonomous driving, and the integration of artificial intelligence with mathematical optimization models.

Wang is currently developing a resilient charging-station planning framework that accounts for system disruptions. The framework is formulated as a complex multi-follower, bilevel mathematical model. To solve the resulting large-scale optimization problem, he is designing an algorithm that combines Generalized Benders Decomposition with Heuristic methods.

Before beginning his PhD studies at UB, Wang earned his Bachelor of Science in Traffic Engineering from Zhejiang University. He chose UB because his research interests closely aligned with Song’s work in sustainable transportation systems and next-generation mobility. He was also drawn to UB’s research community and facilities in civil and transportation engineering. 

Looking ahead, Wang plans to pursue a career in academia. He hopes to advance transportation research and contribute to the development of safer, more resilient, and efficient transportation systems. Outside of his research, Wang enjoys experimenting in the kitchen and preparing home-style dishes.
