Federal Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans

Federal Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans are low-interest loans for students to help pay for the cost of a post-secondary education. UB students may be eligible for Federal Direct Loans through the U.S. Department of Education.

To apply for these loans, complete the FAFSA application.

Subsidized Loans

  • Available to undergraduate students with financial need.
  • The government pays the interest while you're in school, during deferment, and for six months after graduation.
  • There is a limit on the maximum period of time (measured in academic years) that you can receive Direct Subsidized Loans.

Unsubsidized Loans

  • Available to undergraduate and graduate students, regardless of financial need.
  • You’re responsible for all interest that accrues, even while you're in school.
