Major Explorers
Exploring majors is common! Each year, an average of 15 to 20 percent of students in UB’s entering first-year class are exploratory (or, undecided about their major). Approximately 75 to 85 percent of college students change their major at least one time before graduation. The Major Explorers Program assists students in making an informed decision about their major, whether they are choosing a major for the first time or transitioning between majors.
How to Choose a Major
Discover
Discover how your interests and strengths relate to majors and careers by:
- Completing a Course Registration Guide prior to new student enrollment or when transitioning majors.
- Requesting to live in the Major and Career Exploration Living and Learning Community as a first-year EPAC/exploratory student.
- Frequently accessing important information, resources and events via the Exploring Majors UBlearns course (UBIT name and password required).
- Participating in specialized programming for exploratory students, including the EPAC Peer Ambassador program.
- Meeting regularly with your academic advisor. Appointments are mandatory!
- Using career exploration tools.
- Taking the UE 101: Major and Career Exploration Course (fall incoming first-year students only).
Connect
Connect to department and university resources and services by:
- Taking classes in majors that you are considering.
- Meeting with department academic advisors.
- Getting involved on campus. Joining department clubs or other activities is a good place to start.
- Researching degree requirements using the Undergraduate Catalog. Select "Undergraduate Catalog" and then "Majors and Combined Degrees."
- Networking with professionals in your field.
Declare
Declare your major and graduate in four years by:
- Knowing the requirements for your major. Locate your major requirements in the Undergraduate Catalog. Select "Undergraduate Catalog" and then "Majors and Combined Degrees".
- Applying to your major or minor.
- Consulting with department faculty mentors.
- Developing an academic plan for graduation and reviewing the Curricular Plan for your major. (Find your major in the Undergraduate Catalog by selecting Program Requirements (center of page) and then review the "Curricular Plan" for your major for more information.)
