Responsible Investing

There is power in moving the market through environmental, social and governance investing to become more sustainable and just. This can be done through directly engaging with companies with climate advocacy to change their behaviors or divesting in them completely. The responsible investment committee will advise the UB Foundation on stewarding our resources in a way that aligns with university values.

Fall 2022 - Spring 2023

The University has had a Responsible Investment committee since 2013 as an advisory body for the University at Buffalo Foundation. It is charged with making professional recommendations based on best practices across higher education that align with the University’s values and the triple bottom line approach of environmental, social and governance in their analysis.

In 2023, this committee was officially incorporated as a strategy of the University’s climate action plan. During this year, much research was done using the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education’s (AASHE) Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System (STARS) in identifying peer institutions that disclose their investments and how they conduct proxy voting. The university also hosted a session on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) investing with Erin Komorowski, Director of Environmental, Social and Governance at M&T Bank in April.
